Scaling our renewable power business into real estate
In early 2020, we announced that clean, renewable energy would fully power six of our office buildings in Northern Virginia: Potomac Tower, One and Two Halley Rise, Reston Summit II, and 601 & 701 12th Street Landing. The properties are powered by a solution uniquely capable of providing 24/7 renewable power and was provisioned through our sister company, Brookfield Renewable, one of the world’s largest investors, owners, and operators of renewable power.

We bring our world-renowned innovation approach to life through a focus on community and sustainability. The NoVa office initiative was a continuation of our focus on developing responsible and sustainable destinations around the world.
At Halley Rise, our mixed-use development in Reston aiming for LEED Neighborhood Development status, which includes One and Two Halley Rise, we are piloting multiple solutionss including working with self-driving vehicles to bring a convenient and energy efficient option of transporting commuters within the district. At full build, Halley Rise will feature 1,500 residential units, 1.5 million square feet of office space, 250,000 square feet of retail and more than five acres of programmed, public green space.
In downtown D.C., we are making the most of sustainable opportunities at our office properties, including using rooftops for solar power, urban bee colonies and a produce-producing urban garden. In partnership with law firm tenant Nixon Peabody, Brookfield Properties’ 799 9th Street NW, 750 9th Street NW, and 77 K Street NE host one of the city’s largest solar power installations. The energy derived from these solar panels is credited to low-income Pepco customers in D.C., lowering the energy bills for families in the community. In addition, this year, 799 9th Street earned LEED Platinum status and was awarded by the US Green Building Council for Community Leadership – Innovative Project of the Year due in part to the partnership with Nixon Peabody.
