About the work

Reena Spaulings’ Later Seascapes reference the late work of the British painter J.M.W. Turner. They were produced with the assistance of an iRobot Scooba 450, a floor-scrubbing robot, using high-end wall paint from Farrow & Ball’s Estate Emulsion series. Evoking the history of twentieth century abstract painting, the robot’s spinning brush covers the surface of the canvas and leaves painted traces of its every change of direction.

About Reena Spaulings

Reena Spaulings emerged in 2004 as a pseudonym for a group of downtown New York artists working both as a collaborative “artist” and as a dealer with a gallery of the same name. While exploring the ambiguities of her double identity, Reena Spaulings makes work that playfully confounds art-world hierarchies and divisions of labor while presenting a provisional alternative to the role of the artist typically offered by the market and bound by traditional notions of authenticity. Reena Spaulings’ work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Fonds régional d’art contemporain (Frac), France. In 2017, Reena Spaulings was the subject of a retrospective at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany.
