About the work

From the series The City, which was completed during 1995-1999, Mitch Epstein’s Untitled, New York (Oranges, Blue Curtain) explores the marriage of public and private life in New York. In the foreground, a bowl of ripe oranges sits on a windowsill, contrasted by a transparent blue curtain through which we see the silhouettes of skyscrapers, passing cars and a bright, cloud-filled sky. The image captures many of the contradictions of urban life, interior versus exterior spaces, chaos versus stasis and the natural versus the man-made, all of which Epstein aims to expose in his work.
