Success story: A Flavorful Journey to Success

Dat Jerk
Angela and Richard Fray brought the vibrant tastes of the Caribbean to Maryland with the opening of Dat Jerk in 2016, turning their long-held dream into a thriving reality. Inspired by Richard’s Cuban and Jamaican heritage, the Frays created a menu full of bold, healthy flavors, featuring favorites like Jerk Chicken, Honey Lime Jerk Salmon, and a variety of succulent shrimp dishes. What began as a single fast-casual restaurant has since grown into a beloved local chain, fueled by their dedication to sharing Caribbean culture and cuisine with their community.
Their partnership with Brookfield Properties' Partner to Empower program marked a pivotal moment in Dat Jerk’s growth. As graduates of the inaugural Retail Workshop cohort, Angela and Richard gained invaluable tools to scale their business and joined as Learning Circle Advisors, mentoring other entrepreneurs of color. With this support, the Frays celebrated a major milestone in 2024: opening a new Dat Jerk location at The Mall in Columbia. Their journey continues to inspire, with plans to expand through franchising, bringing the rich flavors of the Caribbean to even more communities.

Candy Connections
What started as a cotton candy stand at local community events has grown into so much more. With their regular pop-up shops at Christiana Mall in Delaware, Candy Connections has been able to build their brand while positively impacting their community and helping others achieve their dreams.
We sat down with Partner to Empower Cohort 22-2 grad Daneya Jacobs to discuss all things Candy Connections, what challenges she faced while developing the concept, how she pivoted, her key learnings, and what the future holds for the brand. Find inspiration from the Jacobs’ retail journey as you embark on your own over at Retailvisory.
