About the work

“The Sedna Legend” is the first monumental sculpture ever carved from Baffin Island marble. Beginning in August 1990, with the quarrying of marble on the shore of Andrew Gordon Bay, east of Cape Dorset, the work continued for six months before its transport and installation in Toronto. The walrus is hewn from gneiss, a granite-like stone that is available on the beach at Cape Dorset. The tusks of both the walrus and the narwhal are marble.
